a
Moncloa de San Lázaro is situated in Cacabelos (León),
at one of the eastern entrances to the town, beside the plaza de San Lázaro;
two ancient and historical paths converge in this square: the Camino de
Santiago, which enters El Bierzo through Foncebadón and which from
Ponferrada continues through the towns of Columbrianos amd Camponaraya on its
way to Cacabelos, and the Camino Real which makes its way into the
region via Manzanal (del Puerto) and continues through Bembibre and Cabañas
Raras also to Cacabelos.
La
Moncloa de San Lázaro. It was first mentioned in 1237, in the 13th
century, although we know of its use as the Hospital Lazareto earlier than this.
It lost this role in 1570 but restored it during the Plague, in the 17th
century, when a Chapel was added for the spiritual care of the ill. Both the
Lazareto and the Chapel disappeared in the Modern Age, when the building was
used as a dwelling.
The
1980s saw the commencement of the refurbishment and restoration of the building;
other buildings were also added in line with the original appearance of the
hospital, including the characteristic courtyard typical of the building style
of the plains of El Bierzo, known as Bierzo Bajo, and a "Palloza",
a structure characteristic of Los Ancares, which is currently being used as an
area for displaying and selling to the public artisan products made in our
production workshop, together with other products typical of the gastronomic
culture of this rich and rural land of El Bierzo.
La
Moncloa de San Lázaro is one of the most beautiful architectural
structures in our region, embodying the building style of the area, and which
has been refurbished for its current use as a restaurant; you can see this in
the Café Salón and in the dining rooms; Sala de Ángel
and Sala San Lázaro (where the remains of a wine press can still be
seen).
At
La Moncloa de San Lázaro we like to make food a culture: we
invite you to watch how we prepare our Peppers, Cherries in Aguardiente,
Chestnuts in Syrup and Jams; the months of June, September, October and
November are the times when we solely and exclusively obtain our raw
ingredients from El Bierzo, so that on the table, with a good meal, we can
revive with care and without moderation our native soil which we are in need of
more and more. |
